GRTC Regional Public Transportation Plan
Resulting from the creation of the CVTA and the commitment of funds to regional transit, GRTC, the Richmond region’s transit agency, is in the process of creating a Regional Public Transportation Plan in order to determine how best to use the funds. At present, GRTC is asking for the public to weigh in through an online survey, which can be found here.
Central Virginia Transportation Authority (CVTA)
Created by the Virginia General Assembly, the CVTA is a regional body designed to provide new funding opportunities for transportation projects across the region, which it will administer through the new gas tax in the region. 15% of the CVTA’s funding is reserved for transit investment, but more can be allocated if so decided. PSG is monitoring the proceedings of the body, including potential new transportation improvement projects and how funding will be advocated.
Transit Funding
Though the state and federal governments contribute to transit funding, the majority of GRTC’s funding comes from the jurisdictions in which it operates. With the creation of the CVTA and the funding that comes with it, localities have been permitted to reduce their contributions to GRTC by up to 50%. One of PSG’s priorities is to secure a commitment from each locality to increase their funding to their previous levels, as we will only be able to create a truly efficient and equitable transportation system if we are willing to fund it. We are also committed to advocating for free fares across the GRTC system, something that would increase ridership, reduce operating costs, and reduce cost-burdens on GRTC’s predominantly low-income riders. We encourage you to get in touch with your City Council or Board of Supervisors representatives and tell them that you support increased funding for GRTC.
ConnectRVA 2045
ConnectRVA 2045 is the Richmond Region’s Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP). This plan will guide transportation investment in the region over the next 25 years. You can find the plan here.
