Stewart Schwartz, Board of Directors

Stewart Schwartz is the Executive Director and a founder of the Coalition for Smarter Growth, the leading smart growth organization in the Washington, D.C. region. He is also a founder of the Partnership for Smarter Growth (PSG).An attorney with experience in land use, transportation and the environment, Stewart has worked for the President’s Council on Sustainable Development, the Land Trust Alliance, and the Southern Environmental Law Center, and has volunteered for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.A retired Navy Captain with 24 years of active and reserve service, Stewart earned a B.A. in Foreign Affairs and a J.D. from the University of Virginia, and a M.A. in National Security Studies from Georgetown University. The Washington Business Journal recognized him as a Business Person of the Year in 2002 and as a member of its 2012 Power 100 -- the most powerful business leaders in the Washington, D.C. region. Stewart also serves on the board of the Virginia Conservation Network and is a member of the Virginia Bar Association. Stewart makes his home in Richmond (and on Amtrak!) – splitting his time working on smart growth issues in the D.C. and Richmond regions.
